Technology validation of removal of heavy metals from electroplating wastewater using the green glass adsorbent transformed from waste LCD panel glass.

Absrtact
With the development of the global economy, environmental pollutions which are caused by industrial activities have gradually increased, such as soils and water polluted with heavy metals, resulting in the deterioration of the environment, especially in some developing countries. Because heavy metals are extremely hazardous to the environment and organisms, they harm to human wellness through the food chain. However, there are some problems or limitations in the current treatments of wastewaters and soils contained heavy metals, such as high treatment cost, complicate pretreatment, secondary pollution, matrix consideration etc. To create a simpler, cheaper, and efficient needed no limitation in use approach for wastewater treatment is urgently necessary. Green glass adsorbent is a novel type of heavy metal adsorbent with high efficiency. It is transformed from waste LCD panel glass with an specific nano-technology. It features some specific characteristics, including: high adsorption capacity; excellent acidic and chemical resistance; recyclable; pretreatment before adsorption is unnecessary; no secondary pollution generates after the adsorption process and adsorbed metal ions can be simply desorbed and recycled. Applying the green glass adsorbent to treat wastewaters is simple, in which the green glass adsorbent is added directly into wastewater to adsorb heavy metal without pretreatment and it is easy to be regenerated for reuse. Compare to other adsorbent or ion exchange resin, no matter the production cost or the operation cost, the green glass adsorbent possess great advantages to increase custom’s wilingness to use. In this study, we scale up the production of the green glass adsorbent to 200 Kg per day. Furthermore we also design an on-line modularized adsorption system for heavy metals in wastewater. At present, 10.8 tons of wastewater containing 15 mg/L of copper and 900 litters of wastewater containing 1,400 mg/L of chromium have been treated. Both of them can conform the effluent standards promulgated by EPA
